Master classes series - Breathing, voice, movement. (top)
In January 2005, Professor Ellen Müller-Preis conducted her last breathing master seminar in Australia at the Faculty of Music, University of Melbourne.
The course invited singers and instrumentalists (winds and strings) to a very intensive and specialised workout over six days that helped them master problems such as: releasing tension in neck, shoulder, diaphragm etc., finding the correct way of holding the instrument, and how to let breath, energy and voice flow freely.

Lipizzaners with the Stars
Bringing the spirit of Vienna to Australian audiences

Lipizzaners With The Stars combines the Mozart Orchestra with the amazing soprano voice of Merlyn Quaife and the grace and elegance of 10 white Lipizzaner stallions. Music, song and equine excellence - these three art forms combine in a display of musical mastery and the harmonious elegance of horse and human making for a rare cultural experience.
The tradition of the Lipizzaners at the Viennese court
Having grown up in Vienna, the home of the famous Spanish Riding School, Thomas is proud to be a product of the great Viennese tradition and the culture of being equally partial to the enjoyment of any combination of delicious wine, food, fine arts, architecture, music and dance.
Developed by the Hapsburg monarchy in the 16th century, and bred from the descendants of the steeds used for Roman chariot racing and the Andalusian horse, the Lipizzaner is truly the horse of royalty. This rare and magnificent horse is known for its great strength and intelligence, its romantic history, classic beauty and harmonious, athletic way of moving.
Merlyn Quaife, Mozart Orchestra, Thomas Pinschof and Jochen Schubert
The Lipizzaners perform to the music of the Mozart Orchestra - and Merlyn Quaife sings three arias with the Lipizzaners. Two beautiful songs are accompanied by the great guitarist Jochen Schubert.
The Mozart Orchestra under the baton of its founder, Viennese-born Thomas Pinschof, conductor and Music Director for the event, takes its inspiration from the European tradition of music making and the vision to bring 'the spirit of Vienna' to Australian audiences.
A performer of great versatility, Merlyn Quaife's regular performances include opera, oratorio, chamber music, lieder and contemporary music in Australia and Europe.
Airs Above The Ground
CAPRIOLE: The horse finds his tempo, leaps into the air, drawing his forelegs under his chest and, at the height of elevation, kicks out violently with the hind legs.
COURBETTE: The horse balances on the hind legs and then jumps, keeping the hind legs together and the forelegs off the ground.
LEVADE: The horse must maintain a haunched position at a 45-degree angle to the ground, requiring muscle control and balance that is most difficult to perfect.

Lipizzaners With The Stars "was full of surprises - the first being the absolute magnificance of the black Friesans, which contrasted perfectly with the gracefulness of the white stallions. With crinkled manes flowing right down to their shoulders, these amiable giants simply took the closeness of the audience and the atmosphere in their stride as they first performed as a trio then later as part of a quadrille with the Lipizzaners.
Towards the end of the show, one was also given the special role of carrying Merlyn Quaife as she sung Mozart's The Queen of the Night from his opera, The Magic Flute. A hushed exclamation through the audience of 'she's on the horse' was some indication of the audience's realisation of how well the two aspects of opera and equines had been blended...
With an engaging ability to appear as if she was performing especially for particular people in the crowd by making eye contact with them, Merlyn's vocal talent and skill as a performer was obvious even to those who knew nothing about the arts...
After the show, the general consensus seemed to be that this show had appealed to a wide range of people and was, as touted, absolutely brand new and unique."
